The area is made up of typical valleys of glacial origin and rugged peaks of the mighty Ortler-Cevedale Mountain Group, and around ¾ of the area is 2,000 metres above sea level.

The landscape extends over majestic ridges and it is covered in lush forests, pastures and verdant high-altitude meadows and it is crossed by rushing streams that bubble up from perennial glaciers. The morphological variety provided by the conspicuous altitudes (the peak of Mount Ortler reaches 3,905 metres) allows the existence of an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna.

In addition to being a park with uniquely beautiful landscape, Stelvio is also rich in history: numerous villages and farms, scattered here and there in the valley and on the mountainsides are fascinating examples of ruraland sacred architecture, in perfect harmony with the natural environment.
Furthermore, the park was also the scene of combat during the First World War and there are still numerous traces and testimonies to those events.
